Science

Diamond Creek Primary School offers a dynamic, collaborative and engaging Science program where students investigate, explore, make predictions and solve problems. Students have the opportunity to experience the joy of scientific discovery and nurture their curiosity about the world around them. The curriculum supports students to develop their scientific knowledge, understandings and skills to make informed decisions about local, national and global issues. Throughout their journey in the Science program offered at Diamond Creek Primary School they develop critical and creative thinking skills and challenge themselves to identify questions, apply new knowledge, explain science phenomena and draw evidence-based conclusions using scientific methods.

We aim to support students in developing an interest in Science by expanding their curiosity and willingness to explore and ask questions about the changing world. We help students to use a range of scientific inquiry methods, including questioning, planning and conducting experiments and investigations, collecting and analysing data, evaluating results and drawing evidence based conclusions. A collaborative learning environment is created where students enjoy communicating and justifying their findings to fellow students and debating scientific arguments and claims.

Some of the Science units students participate in include:

PHYSICAL SCIENCE: Smooth Moves

Exploring the concept that forces can be exerted by one object on another through direct contact or from a distance.

BIOLOGICAL SCIENCE: Plants in Action

Living things have life cycles. Students discover that living things, including plants and animals, depend on each other and the environment to survive.

CHEMICAL SCIENCE: What’s the Matter?

Students experiment in many ways to learn that solids, liquids and gases have different observable properties and behave in different ways.

PHYSICAL SCIENCE: Light and Sound

Students experiment with light and Sound which are produced by a range of sources and can be sensed.

EARTH and SPACE SCIECNE: Our place in space

Scientists have used observations of the day and night sky to understand our place in Space. With the advance of technology, astronomers seek answers to the big questions in life, such as the origins of the Universe and the existence of life on other planets.

PHYSICAL SCIENCE: It’s electrifying

Students are fascinated by discovering that electrical energy is part of our everyday lives at home, at work and at school. Electrical circuits provide a means of transferring and transforming electricity. Energy from a variety of sources can be used to generate electricity.
