LANGUAGE ARTS -
The Mathematics program at Diamond Creek Primary School provides students with access to mathematical ideas, knowledge and skills through collaborative group work, hands-on math’s games, interactive computer/iPad/Interactive whiteboard activities and engaging instructional sessions.
The mathematics curriculum at Diamond Creek Primary school focuses on developing refined mathematical understanding, fluency, reasoning, modelling and problem-solving. These capabilities enable students to respond to familiar and unfamiliar situations by employing mathematics to make informed decisions and solve real-life problems efficiently.
The mathematics curriculum aims to develop mathematical and numeracy skills for everyday life, see connections and apply mathematical concepts, and to pose and solve problems in mathematics. To achieve this we cover three main strands in mathematics including Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry and Statistics and Probability.
Number and Algebra
Students apply ‘number sense’ and strategies for counting and representing numbers. They explore all they can in relation to the properties of each number. Students learn a range of computation strategies and build an understating of the links between operations, such as the relationship between addition and subtraction. Students also apply their number and algebra skills to maths investigations where they solve problems and communicate their reasoning.
Measurement and Geometry
In this area students develop an understanding of size, shape, position and movement of 2D and 3D objects. They have the opportunity to construct figures and objects to build their understanding. Using a variety of equipment and the metric measuring system students’ measure quantities of both liquids and solids. They build an understanding of measures such as area, speed and density.
Statistics and Probability
Through statistics and probability students have the opportunity to collect, analyse and draw conclusions about data they have collected. Students undertake investigations, and using a number of different representations, they present, summarise and interpret data. Students build an understanding of probability and develop their ability to critically evaluate chance and data concepts and make reasoned judgements.
